Mack was actually kind of nervous for this. He had planned more for this than anything else in his entire life. It was a special day for Alex and he didn't want to mess it up or anything. He supposed it was going to be a special day for him as well because he was sharing it with Alex. He had everything planned, a new car full of presents that he probably overdid completely with, and a surprise planned out with Kabu for later on. Alex was going to love it as long as it went by the plan. Mack hadn't told him anything until it was time to go. He made sure Alex knew it wasn't something he had to dress up for.
Well... he told Alex that but it hadn't stopped him from buying a new pair of jeans for the occasion. He just wrote the letter on the table for when Alex got home from work or whatever. It was simple. Meet me at Serenity falls. <3 Mack didn't want to give too much away. He already had Kabu and they had planned everything out. To Mack... Kabu was part of the family now. He wanted him to be a part of it for real. That meant he got to spent Alex's birthday with them. He knew after they were done eating he was going to go off and play for a bit, and leave the two alone. Mack wasn't worried. He had laid the blanket down and had the basket of food sitting next to it. He had packed some normal food in it. Potato salad, macaroni salad, chicken salad sandwiches. All store bought of course because Mack couldn't cook. The food wasn't the main thing here. Mack could have taken Alex anywhere he wanted to go. Mack wanted them to be alone. As a family. He wanted it to be special. The car was parked somewhere Alex couldn't see it. Everything was ready for him to come. He sat on the blanket and looked at the waterfall. He couldn't believe they were both eighteen now. It seemed like just yesterday they tried drowning a rat at a horse race in Spain.

The past month with Mack and Alex had gone by like a dream. Kabu kept waiting for them to do what they'd said they would, find somewhere for him to go. But they never did. And then one day it was just very clear that he was there to stay. That he had a new family. A new home, a new life. And he loved them deeply for it. He had been sleeping on the couch when Zeke was around, but finally Alex decided that he needed something more comfortable and permanent, so they put Zeke and his brother on the couch, and Kabu got his own room. Alex decorated it for him and everything. It was...more than he could ever have dreamed for. They had done everything for him when he had nothing. They were without a doubt the best thing that had ever happened to him. So Kabu was super excited to celebrate Alex's birthday with them. It made him feel like he was a real part of their lives. And the plans Mack had made...well, he was even more excited about those. He'd been very good about keeping everything a secret even though it was hard to not freak out a little. Once Mack had the blanket set out, Kabu bounded over to him and grabbed his hand, swinging on it. "It will be wonderful, Mack!" he assured him. "Everything going to be perfect!" The person in charge of sorting out Alex's work shifts was either a slave driver or a very cruel being. Because, really, who made people work on their birthday of all days? There should be, like, some fucking law against it! It'd be safe to say that Alex wasn't all that pleased about going to work that morning (getting up early on your birthday was not okay neither) and suffered through his hours sans his cheery demeanour. Alex was saving his smiles for two people who actually deserved them. They'd make today better. Unless Mack had forgotten his birthday... which was a thought that had been worrying Alex over the last couple of days. Being sneaky and childish as he was, Alex had taken care to clean more thoroughly than usual... cleaning was the perfect cover and gifts couldn't be that hard to find, right? He was always able to find the Christmas ones his mum bought back when he was a teenager. Surely Mack didn't need reminding of such an important event? If Mack valued his sex life, he would definitely remember Alex's birthday.
Once he'd finally plodded home, Alex was considering maybe catnapping for half an hour until he saw a note penned for him on the table. He recognized Mack's scrawl instantly and his tummy did a small flip. Serenity Falls. God, it was because of his birthday, wasn't it? It had to be. Alex bobbed from foot to foot quietly, grinning like the Cheshire cat and chuckling excitedly under his breath while he got ready. He no longer felt the need for a power nap, just for a fresh top and a quick wash of his face.
The walk to the waterfall seemed much longer than usual due to Alex's impatience to get there. Probably the only positive thing that came from it was that the teen managed to calm himself down a bit. He was eighteen now, an adult. He could almost hear his mum saying "and its about time you start acting like one too" echo in his head.
"Cari!" Alex grinned once he reached the falls, spotting his boyfriend with a cheeky monkey dangling off his arm. "Hey, you two. Sorry if I'm late... I just got home and saw the note." The teen apologized, toeing off his shoes so he could stand on the blanket that had been laid out. He hopped over, taking care not to knock anything, and swooped down to kiss Mack on the lips before plopping down by his side which wasn't being clung to by Kabu. "Oooh... I see these are new." Alex sang, his attention brought to Mack's trousers when his bare fingers had brushed casually against them. He approved of leather greatly, and on Mack even more so. The combination of the two for Alex was just... unf. "They're really... nice." Alex thought that it wouldn't be appropiate to say "sexy" in front of a kid. But Mack probably knew what he was thinking anyway.

Mack grabbed hold of Kabu's hand when he did and squeezed it tight. He didn't mind his choice in clothing. Mack thought it was about what the person wanted, not what anyone thought. And anyways... Unless people knew. They could pass him off as a girl. Made him even more adorable. Mack leaned over and kissed the top of Kabu's head. "I sure hope so. Thanks for helping."
[/b] Mack told him, amazed by how much English he was learning already. He was smart. His head looked at his amazing boyfriend when he came. He was so amazing. Mack kissed him back and leaned into his side when he did. "Happy birthday, love."[/b] Mack told him with a smile. He looked down at the hand on his leg. Yeah... he picked well when he thought Alex would like these. "I got them just for you."[/b] Mack said as he laughed and kissed Alex again. "I have it all planned out. We're going to have a picnic by the waterfall. Then lay here and watch the sunset together. And Kabu is joining us because he's our family too. Then if you're good I'll show you your birthday presents."[/b] Mack winked as he teased the love of his life. When Alex showed up, Kabu waited for him and Mack to exchange hellos before wrapping his arms around Alex's neck in a hug and kissing him on the cheek. "Happy birthday, Alex!" He sat himself down in his lap and looked at Mack's new pants with him. They were very fancy, he could tell that much. Holding out a hand, he showed Alex his nail polish - it was a color Alex had gotten him. "Mack paint for me," he told him. "And he not even get paint everywhere!" Normally, that job was delegated to Alex.
He listened to Mack's explanation carefully, only understanding some of it because he'd heard the plan before, in Spanish. Kabu's face broke into a bright grin when Mack said that he was family. He knew, but it was so nice to hear. He snuggled against Alex even more. "Your presents are very good. Pero no puedo decirte porque es una sopresa." Kabu mimed zipping his lips and throwing away the key. "Va a encantarte."
Notes: But I can't tell you because it's a surprise. You're going to love it.

"That sounds... just perfect, cari." Alex beamed when he was given birthday wishes from both Mack and Kabu. He should've known better then to doubt them remembering his birthday. He ran his hand over Mack's thigh, his palm travelling lightly over the leathery fabric that felt divine on his skin. He remembered when he met Silver and the guy had been wearing leather trousers too, they'd looked good on him, Alex gave him that, but not half as good as they look on Mack. His boyfriend's sex appeal sky rocketed with those trousers because, yeah, Mack had the behind to work them with.
His attention was thankfully drawn from the guy's choice of clothes by some bright, lime green nails being thrust into his face. Alex took Kabu's hand and inspected Mack's handiwork with a little grin. "Not bad, not bad. Still say I do it better though." He winked cheekily in Mack's direction letting go of Kabu's hand so he could wrap his arms around the small boy while he sat on his lap. "What did you have to do for him to paint them for you?" Because, in all honesty, Alex couldn't see Mack exactly offering to put on Kabu's nail polish.
Alex jiggled Kabu about on his lap and prodded the boy in his side with a spidery finger. "No digas esoooo..." He whined light-heartedly. "That's cruuuuel... it makes me want to see them even mooore." But it meant presents. Soon. Alex liked presents and surprises even though he had zero patience for them. God, he just wanted presents. He should probably be all disappointed in his superficial behaviour but... it was his birthday. It was allowed. Alex looked at Mack with a wide grin. "Me va a encantar sea lo que sea. 'Cause its just us three."

Alex looked adorable with Kabu around his neck hugging him and just in general. Mack thought that Kabu was the one thing they needed. It wasn't like there was anything wrong with their relationship. Sure... they tended to cheat and Mack tended to make mistakes more than any other man in the world. But they loved each other more than anything. They had a lifetime to get comfortable with one another and they had. It would only make everything ten times better to add someone else into the mix of their life.
"Hey. Who said I wouldn't have wanted to just paint his nails!"
[/b] Mack tried saying but couldn't help but laugh before finishing the sentence. "Okay. We made a deal. I painted his nails, he helped me with your birthday surprise."[/b] Mack thought it was a pretty fair trade off, actually. Mack gave both of his boys a wide smile and laced his fingers with Alex's. "Are you hungry? We can eat whenever you want to."[/b] Mack told him with a glace toward the basket with all the food he bought. Maybe perhaps a bit much for two guys and a small boy. But oh well. Kabu giggled at the bits of their banter that he actually understood. He held onto Alex's arms and snuggled back against him. He pulled away enough so Alex could see his expression. "Also, I make this face to him," he explained, immediately going doe-eyed and sticking out his lower lip. He had perfected the look very quickly, studying Alex's grown-up version. It was pretty safe to say he had surpassed his master.
"Compró demasiada comida," Kabu confided to Alex in a stage whisper. "A veces, creo que Mack sólo le gusta gastar dinero." He grinned up at Mack with a playful wink. He reached for the basket and peeked the top open. He was pretty sure Mack had stashed the sweets at the bottom where Kabu couldn't sneak cookies out of the basket.
"There is a lot of meats. We will have sobras." He slipped out of Alex's lap and poked into the basket further, trying to get a glimpse of the desserts.

Alex couldn't hold down the scoff of laughter that escaped his chest. He knew Mack wouldn't willingly paint someone's nails, even for someone like Kabu. Alex found his mind wondering whether his boyfriend would paint his nails though... not some bright, insane, almost fluorescent colour but... the little glass pot of see-through varnish he'd bought the other day for Kabu looked tempting. Alex shook his head slowly and fished about a bit in the basket for a sandwich. He wasn't all that hungry now - he was too excited to see what surprise Mack and Kabu had been planning to want to eat.
"I've taught him well." Alex chuckled, unwrapping a sandwich and taking a hearty bite of it when he saw Kabu's cutesy face - the very same one he uses on Mack to get what he wants. "What are you looking for, Kabbie? Pásame algo de tomar ya que estás ahí, por fa." Taking advantage that the little kid was occupied with the picnic hamper, Alex scooted back over to Mack and leaned against his side, still chewing away on his sandwich.
"This is really nice, cari. Gracias." Alex said, tilting his head up so he could bring his lips close to Mack's cheek. He didn't kiss him though, he sorta just used his cheek to brush away the crumbs from his own lips with a devious, little grin. Alex put the crusts in the empty packaging (ew, crusts) and nestled back into Mack. "I know I shouldn't ask buuuuut... what did you geeet me?~"

Okay so maybe that look was involved as well. And maybe Mack kind of melted at the look of it just like he did when Alex did it. He was a fucking softie and he knew it, but he didn't want to change that. He didn't mind painting Kabu's nails. Even if he was a boy and not a girl. He was dating a boy and not a girl. He didn't see anything wrong with bending the gender rules a bit. So what. Mack's family was filled with 3 gay guys. He could completely deal with that. He loved it in fact.
"Way too well. I'm going to be giving in to anything he wants now."
[/b] Mack said with a smirk. He didn't mind. He'd give Kabu the world if he could. Just like he would give Alex the world. Mack eyed the small boy closely. "Eat a sandwich, Kabu. Don't dig for the sweets."[/b] Mack teased, knowing what he was probably looking for, he got side tracked by Alex snuggling into him more though. Feeling his lips on his cheek, but so soft it couldn't be considered a kiss. Next thing he knew he had crumbs on him. He smiled wide and turned his head to look at his boyfriend. "Here, let me get that for you."[/b] Mack laughed before leaning in to kiss him again. "And you'll find out soon. Don't worry. This is going to be the best night of your life."[/b] Mack teased Alex more. He wasn't lying though. Kabu poked his head up when Alex started talking to him and nodded. "Hay vino. Lo quieres?" He pulled a bottle of red wine from the basket and held it out before going back in for the plastic wine glasses. After he had passed the picnic stemware over to the adults, he pulled his own juice box out of the basket and set it down on the blanket. "No me gusta el vino. Mack me permitió probarlo pero tiene un sabor asqueroso. Blech."
When Mack called him out on searching for the sweets, Kabu pouted a little, trying to look innocent and not doing such a good job. "Why you think I was doing that?" he asked, as if offended by the suggestion that he would commit so heinous a crime. "I am be good today." He adopted a superior, almost regal expression, holding his shoulders back and sitting up straighter. He pulled a sandwich out and started munching on it delicately.
Caught out in his first attempt at scoring dessert early, Kabu started calculating just how much sandwich he would need to eat before he would be allowed a cookie. He wouldn't eat the crusts, though he didn't actually mind them so much, and could leave a lot of sandwich on them.
Note: There's wine. Do you want it? I don't like wine. Mack let me try it but it tastes yucky.

Wait... there were sweets in that basket? Alex looked down at the wine bottle handed to him with a sneaky grin as he uncorked it with a bit of effort. Those sweets were totally his. The teen poured out two helpings of wine - not too much though - and handed Mack his. "If I hear you letting Kabbie try wine again... I'll get pissed." Alex told him sternly, ignoring the fact that his parents used to let him have small tipples as a pre-teen. But, then again, you only had to see at what age Alex had really started drinking to see why the teen opposed to Kabu trying alcohol so young.
Having Mack fended Kabu off his pursuit for treats, it left the picnic hamper free for Alex to peer into instead. The guy had a notorious sweet tooth. He couldn't not look for the yummies now that he knew of their existence. And there, at the bottom and hidden away, Alex found them: big, chunky cookies. They looked like his favourite ones. The ones which were soft and chewy in the center.
Alex kept his back turned to Mack and slowly brought one to his mouth, chewing on the corner with a triumphant and cheeky grin. What? It was his birthday. He got to be naughty... even though he would've done the exact same thing any other normal given day. "Oh man, this is good."

He was just glad Alex was in a good mood and wanted his presents so badly, there was no way he was going to start a fight at the moment. "He had uhm. A toothache! Yeah. So I gave him some to numb the pain? People uhm. Do that. Uh. Right?"

He watched Kabu take a sandwich only to watch Alex steal a cookie. What a little kid. "You are so lucky it's your birthday."[/b] Mack said with a slight shake of his head. He leaned toward Kabu to whisper in his ear. "Take a few cookies and a juice box or whatever and go play for a bit. Come back in like twenty minutes as planned."[/b] Mack said it low enough that he was sure Alex wouldn't hear. Kabu laughed at their bickering and shook his head. "Don't worry, Alex. It was a small drink. A...sorbito...sip!" He beamed, proud of himself for remembering the English word. "Just a sip." He grinned and sucked on his juice box.
When Mack leaned over and murmured into his ear, Kabu nodded quickly. "I go play now!" he announced. He reached into the basket and grabbed as many cookies as he could hold. He wrapped them in a napkin and pecked Alex on the cheek. "So you can have un momento romántico." With that, the boy scurried off downstream where he knew there were some cool rocks he could play on without falling into the river.

Toothache. Right. Because Alex totally believed that little white lie. He thought it was whiskey or something that you took for toothaches, not wine. Anyway, it didn't matter enough to get into a tizzy about. Alex refused to let himself get into a bad or even mildly ticked off mood. He'd just make sure that it didn't happen again in the near future; definitely not until Kabu was, like, fifteen or something. Fifteen seemed a reasonable age to Alex for a child to have a decent tipple of wine.
"What? They're cookies." Alex chuckled quietly when Mack shook his head at him on catching the Nephilim nibbling his way through a biscuit. He winked playfully and bit into the crumbly delight. Chewing slowly, Alex saw Kabu nab a few cookies and wrap them up, peck him on the cheek and then get up. The teen tilted his head to the side a fraction and glanced sidewards at Mack. Romantic moment? Alex was all for one of those.
"Okay, Kabbie. Pero ten cuidado." A bit pointless telling a water manipulator to be careful near the water's edge but... Kabu was still only a little water manipulator? Plus those rocks got slippery at times. Alex turned around and slipped his unfinished cookie on his plate so he could scoot closer to his boyfriend, having both of his hands free to wrap around his shoulders lightly. "Momento romántico? Mmm... I like how that sounds." The teen muttered with a impish smirk. Alex nuzzled Mack's neck a tad with his nose affectionately before speaking once more: "Just... thanks again for this, cari. Its really sweet."
