~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Shane came home earlier than he expected. He left the military office early because he couldn't stand the others. They all sounded like they had done anything to gather information from Alderres, which none of them did. He sighed. He was going to make pasta tonight. He wanted to go Italian for that night. He took out a bottle of Tequila Ley and began to take a shot as he prepared dinner. It was still six in the evening and he was sure he would be able to make dinner in time before Bree got home. He stretched his fingers and began to cook. He grabbed the ingredients from the pantry and got a pot and poured water on it. He placed a small amount of oil and placed it over the stove. He got out the pack of farfalle he had in stock and out out tomatoe sauce, condensed milk, and other stuff. He took another shot of tequila and began to cook. It was going to be a long night.
One reason for his drinking was the fact that almost everyone in the office kept pestering him about Bree. They kept asking why he was living in the same house as the florist. Some even dared to ask him if they were having an affair. He sighed. Bree was a nice woman. She didn't deserve to be some toy for Shane to play for a while and then just throw out when he got bored. No, she deserved better than that. he took another shot as he was nearly finished with the pasta. It had been an hour and a half and Bree was due home in a few minutes. He prepared the table and the glasses and everything. He was going to serve wine with the pasta to have the Italian effect down to the stitch. He did well. And he was already half way through the bottle of tequila. He sighed. He hoped that Bree had better luck than he did. Affair? Ha! Shane was not that harsh on women.

Bree'd had a pretty crappy day at work, if she was completely honest. It's been the same for the entire time she'd been living at Shane's place. Was it one or two weeks now? Bree didn't care, if she was honest. Well, she was honest because, hello, Fallen of Honesty. All she cared about was all the stick she was getting at the shop. It was mainly officers (from Shane's workplace she assumed) coming to ask about the whole living arrangements scenario. She couldn't lie to them, which royally sucked, so she just did what Shane said and refused to answer questions.
But, by now, she'd gotten sick and tired of it all. All she wanted to do was pack up, go home. And not to Shane's house. It was a lovely place. Bree had begun to think of it as a second home, but a temporary one all the same. No, she wanted to go home. To her little apartment. Her apartment was where her home was, where she felt in place, where she felt comfortable. Sure, she did feel comfortable at Shane's, but she'd never feel as comfortable as she did at her place.
It had all gotten too much. So, she'd ended up locking up for an hour or two at midday, just to have an angry strum on her guitar. Just to see if she could come up with anything. She'd managed to write one song, which was rather good, and calmed her down enough to be able to finish the day. But if she hadn't of done that, she knew she would have had to go home early. She wasn't in the mood to be nice, or attentive and bleh. She was, simply put, quite angry.
This had all ebbed by the end of the day, though, and now all she was feeling was depressed. She knew that she'd have to go back to Shane's house, not to her own, and then have to come back here the next day and face all this again. It was all getting too much for her to handle. However, she hoped knew it would probably all be over soon; the commotion with the woods and stuff seemed to have died down a little.
She went back to Shane's, and walked straight through the door. She knew she didn't have to knock; she'd been living here long enough now She'd estimated it at roughly two weeks; knocking was well out of the window. "Hi," she called out. Even though she knew Shane was in the house, she hadn't really directed it to anyone. It'd just been so that whoever was here (probably just Shane) would know that she'd gotten home.
She ended up just walking through to the living room and sitting down, with nothing better to do. She could smell that dinner was either ready or nearly ready. That was good; she'd gotten home just in time then. Well, any time would have been just in time. Because, with all the officers coming in to chat about her living arrangements, she'd felt on the brink of screaming. Why was it always assumed, when a man and a woman were living together, that they were in some kind of relationship? Hah. As if Bree would ever trust anyone like that again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Shane was just about finished with the pasta when he heard the door open and closed. A female voice broke the silence of the whole house and Shane knew Bree was home... Had returned. She had never considered his house her home. And he respected that. he took another shot of tequila before heading out the kitchen with two plates of pasta. "Hey Bree! You're just in time for dinner! Come on and have a seat here so we can eat!" Shane called out in a very un-Shane way: he was perky and red-faced. Shane had nearly finished the three-fourth of the tequila ley but Shane would never say he was drunk. "I hope you like pasta! I made farfalle pasta for dinner and a bottle of Romanée Conti 1945 will make the whole Italian dinner just perfect." he said with ahuge smile on his face. If Shane were could only see himself now, he'd probably punch himself and sober up. He went back to the kitchen to get his tequila glass and took another shot before he refilled it and went back to the dinning table. He hoped that Bree wouldn't recognize the red wine she was drinking. it was a very expensive bottle and Shane just brought it out from storage.
He sat down and took up his fork, "How was your day, Bree? I hope ou had a better day than I did. I came home earlier that I normally do because everyone else kept asking who you were to me and why we live in the same house. One of the officers below be dared to think that you are having an affair and that I keep you close because I fear others touching you. I saw to it that he didn't think of it again or even attempt to share his thoughts. He was as good as punished." he said and sighed. Why was his life a big deal to the rest now? Was it the first time they saw a man and a woman living in the same house? He groaned, half breeds and humans can be a bit stupid and tackless at times.

Bree was quite surprised when Shane's perky (maybe overly perky) voice broke the silence in the house. It was just...weird. She'd never heard Shane sound that way before; he'd always been very serious and straight-laced. Always friendly, but still. Now, for some peculiar reason, he sounded really happy. She wasn't quite sure why until she came through to the dining room. Okay, he had a huge smile on his slightly reddened face. That was one sign. Then, when she sniffed the air delicately, she finally twigged it.
Under the smell of dinner, she could sense a slightly alcoholic scent, rich and burning. Yeah, it was tequila. This made more sense; Shane was quite obviously drunk. Well, that was okay, she supposed. She'd just have to be more careful in what she said than she usually was. He seemed to be the type that got happy-drunk, from what she'd seen so far, but she didn't know. That could all change with the drop of a hat.
She smiled as he placed her plate down in front of her,, and she was greeted by yet another well cooked meal. Shane was an amazing cook, she had to admit. It was what made staying here that little bit more bearable. She looked up from her plate at the wine the wine carefully, though. Yes, it probably would go well with the meal. But she didn't really want to overdo it; she was a bad when it came to amounts and things. So she didn't know how much would get her drunk. She'd try and be careful, though.
"Ugh, you had a crappy day too, huh?" she said with a sigh. "I hate to say it, but my day was just as bad as yours. Didn't get a moment's peace; I ended up having to close for an hour or two around midday." She hated the florist sometimes. It was right on the corner, so basically everyone knew where it was. And that really irritated her sometimes. However, she shook the thought away, and began to eat. It was really good, as always. "But...It's nearly over, right?" She shrugged. It wouldn't be for much longer. Or that was what she hoped, anyway.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ He was, for some reason, in a happy place. Well, he was drinking and nearly finished the bottle all by himself. It had been a long time since he drank a whole bottle himself. And what made him more drunk was the fact that he was moving the whole time he was drinking. But as he was about to have another bite of his meal, he stopped. Bree had visitors today? "Some officers went to your shop today?" Shane lost the smile and lost whatever drunkenness he had on him. He had hoped that no one had gone to talk to Bree. She was a civilian and officers were required to keep off civilian's private lives. He sighed. And when she asked him if it was nearly over, he sighed again. He didn't know how to answer that. Everyday at work was still chaos. And he was glad that his own commander had not asked him about the rumors spreading about the office.
He looked up at her, "I wish I knew what to answer, Bree. I wish I could that tomorrow everything was going to go back to the way it was and you could go back to you home and be fine again like nothing happened. But I can't. I wish though." he said as he took a shot of his tequila. Damn the day he had. Now, Shane had to find out who the unfortunate once who had dared to asked her about their living arrangements. He was going to have a field day in the morning. "Bree, do you remember who they were that had gone up to see you? Where they soldiers or officers?"he asked her. He was holding his tequila glass tight.

Bree gave a dismissive wave of her hand. Yeah, I had some officers come in today." she said, with an irritated air to her voice. It was only slight, though, barely noticeable. She'd been having the same thing happen for a week now. Or...or was it two? Bleh, that didn't matter. They were pests, although Bree had started to get used to them coming into the store. It was just annoying. There wouldn't be a minute's quiet if they were around. Which was one of the things Bree loved about her shop; how quiet it normally was.
But she supposed it didn't really matter much, because it wouldn't be going on much longer anyway. A couple more weeks, at most. Possibly even shorter than that. Because she knew that she wouldn't stay for more than that. That would seem to her like she was overstaying her welcome, and she didn't want to do that at all. Also, it would be better for her sanity. She couldn't, she simply couldn't, stay here for any longer without going positively loopy.
But...oh, god. She looked up at his next words, wide eyed. What? He...he wasn't sure when this would all be over?! Well, that was helpful, wasn't it?! This may have never been over?! Oh, no. No no no no no. She was not hearing this. It just...it couldn't work that way! But, sadly, she knew better than most would that he wasn't lying to her. That...just...sucked.
Now, that bottle of wine that she'd eyed so warily earlier was beginning to look attractive. Extremely attractive. She knew she shouldn't. But...but it was just so tempting. And, at that moment, a song ran through her mind. A song she used to love. Coppertone by The Academy is. "This charade is never going to last," it said, "so pick the poison, and pour yourself a glass."
And so, that was what she did. She filled the glass in front of her with the deep red liquid, and took a sip. The alcohol slid down her throat smoothly, with quite a pleasant, soothing burn. "No, I don't remember who came to my shop exactly," she said, with a flap of her hand. "They were officers, not soldiers. That much I do know." She rolled her shoulders, and took another sip from her glass. If things kept going the way they were, this was going to be a very long night indeed.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Shane sighed. How was he going to make things better? He didn't know what to answer her and he didn't want to have to lie. Bad things would happened to her if he even attempted to lie. He took another shot of his tequila. He stood up and went to the kitchen, and brought back the nearly empty bottle with him. This was bad. If Shane would be able to finish the whole thing by himself, he didn't know what he'd do. He turned to Bree. "I'm sorry Bree... I really am... I really do wish that I could tell you want you want to hear. We both want the same thing right now: to have everything back to the way they were. But right now, its not happening. Not yet. But... I do have good news though." Shane said as he took another shot. He wondered if what he was going to say would make her feel better. But he knew that she ought to know. She was involved with his case.
"You ought to know that my own superior, my commander, is trying to calm things down. I didn't exactly give a full report that involved you being at Jade forest but I just said that they were after you for some unknown reason. Yes, I did lie but it was better that way that saying you were actually there. I don't know if you were going to be punished if I told the truth. So my superior believed me and even thanked me for taking the initiative to keep you safe without being told to do so." he said and shrugged. He was telling the truth to Bree. He just didn't know if it was going to make her feel better that his own commander was killing down the rumors discreetly. Shane hoped it would make her feel a little better. After all they both went through after the move, Bree's quiet life got ruined because of Shane.

By now, Bree had drained her first glass of the wine, and was pouring her second. This was a lot of information to process, and she knew that she wasn't exactly being wise, but screw it. The alcohol was helping her, she thought. It was giving her a fire that she didn't quite know she was capable of having, and was making her feel a bit more comfortable. Sure, the glass was quite large, and the alcohol percentage was quite high, but she saw it taking quite a while for her to get drunk.
"Stop it." she said to Shane when he apologized for what seemed to be the hundredth time. He didn't need to apologize; what she was feeling wasn't his fault. It was just a combination of everything, really. The depression starting to kick in again. The living situation. Just all of it was becoming a bit too much for her to handle. But one thing was for sure; Shane wasn't a cause. "Just stop apologizing. What I'm feeling like right now...that's not your fault, right? So...don't apologize. You've done nothing wrong."
She tried to smile as she listened to what Shane had to say. It wasn't good that he had lied; she was really disappointed on that front. She'd thought that he'd be honest, or at least try to be. But the good news was that they didn't know that she'd been in the forest, and that she was definitely safe. "Okay. So...things are dying down, then." she said, taking another drink from the glass in her hand. "That's good. Means it's almost over, doesn't it?"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Shane sighed as he poured himself another shot of tequila. He drowned another shot as he tried to finish his dinner. He sighed as he looked down. "You should try and finished your pasta before you have another drink of that wine." Shane said non-nonchalantly. He was trying to come up with another loop hole. How was he able to give Bree back her life back? He owed her that much. "Well, I don't know if it was not all my fault." Well, it wasn't really his fault. His appearance at the forest, Bree's presence and Alex's presence there as well was due to the fate Shane hated most. Seriously. He didn't believe in luck. He was a demon. He was staring at his plate, nearly finishing his pasta when Bree spoke again.
Shane looked away..What was he going to say? Would he say 'Yes, I believe that is what will happen.' That would be lying and she'd know. Shane didn't know what was going to happen. "I honestly don't know Bree.I hope so. Though I usually don't 'hope' at all. But for your sake, I'm willing to hope at all. I want to give you your quiet life back. The life you had before all this mess had began." Shane told her as he stood up, carried his plate and the tequila bottle into the kitchen. He placed the plate in the sink, took a long swig of his tequila, and sighed. What was he going to do now? He leaned back on the kitchen counter, trying to come up with an answer.

Okay, so maybe Bree had miscalculated a tiny bit. This was only her second glass, and things were already starting to go a bit fuzzy around the edges. How high was the percentage in that wine again? Nyeh, she didn't remember. Nor did she really care at that particular moment in time. Though she was guessing it'd been pretty high.
She nodded as Shane spoke, and smiled dryly. "Yeah, good idea." she agreed. She finished her plate of pasta, went out and put it in the sink before she drank any more. Eating helped a bit, she guessed. But with her emotions? Not a chance. She was still feeling pretty terrible.
She shook her head at his next words, flapping her hand in a dismissive fashion. "Naw, it wasn't really anyone's fault, if you think about it." she said, sipping at her...third glass? She wasn't sure. This was a bad sign; she was already losing count. Of course, she hadn't remembered to check with Shane how much the glass could hold before she'd gone right in. And now, she'd completely forgotten about it. It wasn't like he could judge her, though - he'd been going pretty hard on the tequila too. "It was just a case of...y'know, bein' in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Shane spoke again, and what he said made Bree look up from the glass in her hand. ...For her sake? Hoping? Hope. What did that mean? In her slightly inebriated state, Bree wasn't quite sure what he'd meant by those words. So he was willing to hope...for her sake. Something was being done for her sake. That was...actually quite sweet of him, she guessed. It was pretty nice that he was willing to hope. Hope was what kept her going. Hope was the only thing stronger than fear.
"M'kay." was all she said, however. "I'd quite like that, too. And...I think I would quite like to give you your other life back. Y'know, the one where you're not havin' to worry about where I am and what I'm doin' and who's talkin' to me and stuff." She gave a slight roll of her shoulders. That was what she wanted really. For everything to go back to the way it'd been before all this crap.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Shane looked at the bottle and saw that it was nearly empty. He sighed and finished the last few in one swig. He opened the trash bin and dropped it in. But due to the fact that he was now feeling not quite well, he grabbed hold of the counter to steady himself. Alright, so Shane was officially out of his mind. Well he was at home. Who cared. Then he laughed at what Bree said, "That's a first. That someone would actually want something for and not from me." he said as he opened the wine drawer to grab another bottle of drink. This time, he was about to grab a bottle of vodka. Well, its still a drink. He opened the bottle and took a swig. It sizzled in his throat as he swallowed it down. He laughed and turned to Bree.
"Want to know something funny?" he asked as he took a swig of his vodka. "Before all this blew out of proportion, I was actually glad to have lived a quiet and private. Being a demon of wrath takes a toll sometimes. And being on Earth for more than a hundred years makes it even more tiring. I've seen kingdoms come and go. I helped Alexander The Great with his quest for power. And I was even also there were Achilles died. Humans are fascinating creatures. They live their lives and most of them commit the same mistakes not twice but multiple times." he said. He moved out of the kitchen with his bottle and launched himself on the sofa. "And don't even get me started on the human woman. No offence. Even without using my powers, they would do anything to please someone and have something in return. Humans have turned into filthy beings that walk this once great and clean Earth." he said as he took a long and slow swig.

Well, Bree now knew how much each glass of wine was. It was about a quarter of a bottle's worth. She realised this when, on the fourth glass of wine, the bottle appeared to be empty. Save for a little bit left at the bottom, about half a glass. Well, oops. Ah well. That just meant that she'd have to make this one last a bit longer then, didn't it? Yeah, that sounded like a good idea. After three glasses of this stuff, Bree was pretty out of it. Maybe taking this one more slowly would be a good idea.
She leaned against the doorframe nonchalantly listening to Shane's story. She was actually finding it interesting. He'd been on Earth for ages. Her three years had nothing on the inordinate amount of time he'd been on Earth. It was pretty amazing to hear about how it'd been. He mentioned human women, and Bree snickered. Was that really how most human women worked? Bree had only met one human woman i her time, and that'd been Brent's wife. She'd been lovely. But hey, she was just one woman. She probably - definitely - didn't know as much as Shane did about this kind of thing,
"Is that really how they are?" she chimed, with a slight laugh underscoring her words. "I know a few women who aren't like that at all." She slowly sidled over, and sat down carefully next to him. "But, y'know," she said, taking another tiny sip of the glass in her hand, "they aren't exactly human. So, yeah, I can see how that'd be different." She chuckled softly. She'd lost it a bit now, she could sense that a tiny bit. But whatever. All she wanted to do tonight was forget the crappy situation she was currently in.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Shane chuckled as Bree spoke. Then he moved to give her room to sit in. He took another swig of his vodka. "Yeah well, from the human women I have met, they have no sense of dignity left in them. I don't know about the once you've met but the ones I did were all wrong and just... Bleh." he said as he laughed and shook his head. Yeah, most of the women he'd met were all easy. However, for the last thirty years, he had met three women who indeed had changed the way he viewed women. "You know... For the last thirty years, I did however meet three women who were a bit different. It took be a while to get to know them... I even had to go and woo them." he laughed as he recalled the memories of his life just before he came to Carford.
Then he turned to Bree and held back his laughter. Her face looked so red and it looked bigger and puffier than normal. He looked away and took a swig of his drink. He was trying his best not to laugh as he saw her reflection on the glass window. Yeah, drinking had her look different. Shane tried to sneak another peak at her and regretted it. Her face just made him laugh. He laughed and laughed and laughed. "I'm s-sorry... I'm not laughing at you... It's just that... Y-you're face is so red and bigger..." he said as he clutched his stomach.

Bree had completely lost all grip on herself now. She'd been so stupid, she could just feel something wasn't right and that there was something that she'd been worried about when she first moved in...but...damnit, she just couldn't remember what it was. Not that she even cared, anyway. It was just nagging her that something was a little off. But nyeh, she'd probably remember in the morning.
"The one I met," she slurred, giggling slightly, "was a friend's wife. She was real nice. Well, before she died that is." Normally, Bree wouldn't have been so blunt. But she wasn't thinking particularly clearly. So what she said right now didn't really matter, did it? Nope. It was the alcohol talking, not her. She wasn't responsible for her own actions. "But I guess that not all women are that way, are they?"
It surprised her a little bit that Shane had fallen in love before...three times? Okay, just the once had been enough for her. She'd found that with love came pain and suffering, so after that one incident, she'd just left it there. "Ah, well, being in love once was enough for me." she said with a vague wave of her hand. She never would have said that sober; it was one of her deepest secrets. But, hello, alcohol. "Name was Adam. Left me for some human like the one you described." She shrugged, and looked down at her hands, picking at her nails.
That was, until Shane spoke again, laughing really hard. Now, had she not been drunk, that comment would have probably really knocked her. She'd always had low self esteem. So that wouldn't have made her feel any better about herself. But hey, she was pretty much out of her mind. She didn't care right now.
She started giggling, seemingly unable to stop. "Well, who are you to talk?" she snickered teasingly, extending a finger and gently poking his face. "Look, yours is just as bad as mine!" She laughed; she just couldn't stop. Pretty soon, she was nearly crying with laughter, leaning against Shane for support.
Well, that probably wasn't the wisest decision. Because, by now, Shane was laughing just as much as she was, and had leaned forward quite a lot, and was one more laugh away from overshooting and ending up on the floor. And, well, Bree was leaning on him, meaning that she'd fall too. But was she worried about this? Was she even thinking about this? Nope. Not one bit.
That was, until he actually did go a bit too far forward.
The next thing she knew, they were both sprawled on the floor, her on top of him. Well, that wasn't awkward at all, was it? She placed her hands on the floor on either side, still chuckling slightly, and pushed herself up a tiny fraction, with the intention of getting up and going to sit back down. But she couldn't seem to do it. She just stayed there, laughing a little bit, pushed slightly away from Shane, staring into his silvery eyes.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ It was the first time in a very long time since Shane was able to laugh like there was no problem. As if everything was alright. He shook his head, "I wouldn't say that I fell in love with them... But they caught my attention. That was for sure. Those three women made one hell of an impression on me. Excuse the my expression." he said as he chuckled. Then laughed again as Bree began to poke his face with her finger. Well, maybe he was just as red as her. Who cared? they certainly didn't. He laughed again and laughed. But maybe it was a bad idea to lean forward because for he knew it, he was already falling towards the floor. He held her to make sure that she wouldn't end up hurting herself as they fell. He laughed as he heard her laughter. "Are you alright?" he asked with a chuckled.
It was just then that Shane noticed that he was holding on to Bree. And that she was looking straight at him. Now that he took the time to look at her closely, she was actually very beautiful. Even with the reddening face. He brought up one hand and touched her cheek. The space between them was just too short... Yet Shane wanted to actually bridge the gap. So, he pulled his head up and kissed her. It was a shallow kiss. Simple, sweet yet a bit cautious. Her lips tasted like wine, bittersweet. Just like there situation. It was bitter and sweet. Bitter because they have a secret to hide and have everyone in a frenzy of trying to find out their secret. Sweet because she was good company. Shane was glad that he had someone to talk to and cook for. It had been far too long.
