With every day he'd been working a the hospital, his meagre lunch break seemed to be getting shorter and shorter. And that was saying something considering the boy had only been working there a few days. Usually he brought his lunch with him to avoid eating with the other people that worked in the same wing as him but today he'd been running late. He blamed Mackenzie for that one. Mackie and how Alex couldn't seem to get enough of his kisses or touches in the morning. So today Alex was without his packed lunch and, refusing to eat at the cafeteria, he'd opted to venture to Jitters which was just around the corner.
Blowing into his hands to warm them up once the bell tinkled his arrival, Alex scanned the establishment for a good seat; the table by the window looked like a winner. Shrugging off his coat and unravelling his scarf from around his neck, Alex settled in the chosen seat. He put his things on the back of his chair and stared out of the window while he waited to be served. He didn't need to look at the menu - he knew what he wanted, he'd been craving it all morning: milky, sweet coffee and pancakes with honey. He needed the sugar rush if he expected to keep up with his work.
Staring outside, he allowed his mind to wander. Was this really an improvement from Broadhaven? Life back over there... was bearable if you kept your nose clean. But then again, you had to endure all those horrific experiments. Alex shivered, and this time not from the cold. At least he didn't have to go through any of that torture again because that's what it had been. Torture. They'd been treated like aliens, freaks, back there and had been experimented on in the least humane way. Alex couldn't help but wonder how everyone he knew was faring... Mack's little sister, Felix, especially. No. Things were better for them here in Alderres... the war would be difficult but hopefully it was nothing they couldn't handle. This was what they had been trained for in Broadhaven. This was the purpose that had been instructed to them.
The teen was gently stirred out of his nostalgic reverie by approaching footsteps. He brushed the hair from his face and turned his head to see who had came to take his order.
"Hola... may I get a milky coffee and some pancakes? With honey?" Alex paused, did he want anything else? "I think... that'll be it... gracias."

Rancho was a bit annoyed that on his first day, he was already making coffee. Not that he minded, it wasn't the issue. What he didn't like was the fact that since he was good with making all kinds of coffee, their boss thought it was a good idea to put him behind the brewer already. He sighed as he got the order. Milk Coffee? He could make it with his eyes close. He worked swiftly and accurately behind the counter which just awed his new co-workers. But he didn't pay them much attention. The pancake was ready along the the milk coffee. But his co-worker was nowhere to be found. Rancho sighed in frustration. He took off his apron and got a tray. Good thing the table number was placed.
He carefully carried the tray and went to the table by the window. "You're order sir, milk coffee with pancakes and honey." he said as he placed every order on his table fast and cleanly. Then when Rancho looked at the customer, it was the guy who Silver played with at the pub not too long ago. He smirked inwardly. How small the town seemed now. And he knew for sure that the guy wouldn't recognize him since Rancho was hidden behind a bigger man. "Will that be all sir?" he asked with a polite smile.

Alex was beginning to wonder if he'd be able to come to Jitters every lunch break. The aroma of coffee was soothing on his senses yet at the same time invigorating. He was able to catch onto the tell-tale scent of baking goods too and that was simply mouth-watering. Plus the café was snug and warm. This definitely beat eating alone in the hospital's courtyard while he puffed on a cheeky cigarette. But then he wasn't sure if he'd have it in him to ask Mack for lunch money every day until he got his paycheck. He knew the teen wouldn't mind giving it him but... Alex felt awkward about it.
Seeing a tray with his lunch be placed in front of him, Alex turned around to give the waiter a grateful smile and a "gracias". But that never happened because... fuck. This guy had to be as tall as Ackley! This man was, roughly, a whole foot taller than him. "W-Wow... you're... tall." Was all Alex managed to say when he opened his mouth. Realizing that his thoughts had slipped from his mouth, Alex's cheeks glowed a pink and he pursed his lips together, looking down at his tray. "Sorry... um... yeah... I-I think that's all. Gracias."
Okay, so maybe Alex wasn't going to come back tomorrow. How fucking awkward did he have to get? He protested to himself that it wasn't his fault - he just hadn't expected bumping into another Ackley, minus the clumsiness and stutter. "Sorry... you just remind me of a friend because... he's tall too?" Alex, just shut up.

Rancho wanted to laugh when the customer pointed out that he was tall. He wanted to laugh and say 'duh' but he didn't. It would have been rude and he was on his first day. He wanted to Silver that he could maintain a job for at least a month or so. He smiled politely when the smaller man said that Rancho reminded him of a friend of his. He wanted to say, "Was your friend good looking, well dressed and as great as me? If not, then your friend is nowhere like me." But yet again, he kept it to himself. "Well, I'm sure your would have stumble since you spoke of him without him being present." he added as he chuckled and stood up straight.
Rancho knew that he better go back behind the counter soon, "Well, if there is anything else that you might need, please feel free to call my attention and I shall be with you in an instant." Rancho said politely, with a smile and nodded at him before he left. Rancho was going to see and study the guy. What was he really like? And if he was still thinking about the thing at the pub. Everything interested Rancho since Silver had chosen him as his play thing that night. If it were a girl, Rancho would not have even cared. But it was a guy, so he had to take notice of it.

"I think the only thing you have in common is your height, to be honest." This man had way more grace than Ackley did. Alex didn't even want to think of the disaster Ackley would create should he have to carry a tray more than a couple of feet. Alex saw himself covering in scalding coffee with a sticky pancake slapped on his head. That teen was the walking (or stumbling) definition of clumsy. "Thanks again, uh... Rancho." Alex said with a wink as he eyed the man's name on his name tag. He had one on his lab coat but, of course, he tore that thing off as soon as he stepped out of the hospital.
Alex turned to his pancakes with a smile as he twirled the fork between his fingers. Good thing Mack wasn't here - he'd probably want some and, to be honest, these looked too good to share with his stomach. Using his knife and fork, he rolled the pancakes up and cut himself one off, chewing calmly as he looked about the café. It was nice in here and so much better than eating at the hospital.
The teen hastily snatched his phone out of his pocket and checked the screen to see the time, blowing a sigh of relief once he'd swallowed. He had plenty of time, kinda. He set his Blackberry on the table and pushed it away from him, resisting the urge to text Mackie, the tips of his fingers tingling with the temptation. He was probably in class and maybe the professor or whatever wouldn't appreciate her pupil receiving a message from his boyfriend gushing on about how nice the pancakes at Jitters were.
Once the pancakes were finished, Alex cupped his mug close to his lips and let the heavenly aroma of fresh coffee wash his senses before sipping tentatively. Seeing it wasn't too hot, he was able to take a drink. While the boy had been eating, he couldn't seem to shake the feeling that he was being observed and more than a couple of times he'd spotted Rancho glancing in his direction. Alex glowed pink once more. Maybe he'd offended the guy with his "wow, you're tall" comment... or maybe it was what he was wearing? Suede pants weren't all that common to see on a guy now that he thought about it. Was Rancho judging him? Or maybe... Alex was just being paranoid yet again. Trying to shake it off, Alex sent a small smile in the waiter's direction when they next made eye contact.

Rancho was watching the customer while doing his job and attending the other customers who went to the counter as well. He had his hands full and was a bit saddened that he had to keep working while watching Alex. For one thing, Alex's clothes weren't that bad. But the pants didn't make him look any good. Instead, it made the customer seem too gay. Which Rancho didn't know if he really was gay or bi. Like him and Silver. But still. The scarf was a good acesorry. But the shoes. Oh heavens! The shoes was so wrong! It made the guy's feet look bigger.
Rancho snickered to himself, "Maybe he has big feet... Maybe he is actually related to big foot. But this guy is the plural form. Big feet." Rancho thought as he hold back his snicker which earned him a raised brow from the old lady that was his next customer. He tried to focus on work but the thought of the customer being related to big foot was just too hilarious to shove off.

Alex pretty much chose the wrong moment to glance in Rancho's direction. He caught the man eyeing him and then chuckling to himself. Alex swallowed and turned his attention back to his coffee, his paranoia flaring up once more. Was he being laughed at? But why? Alex... wasn't something to laugh at, was he? Sure, he might dress a bit different but he was no further from the norm than most people.
It reminded him when he started wearing his vests, scarves, cutesy shoes and make-up. He'd gotten pointed at, laughed at, pushed around at school, branded a faggot... but if he felt comfortable in his own skin, that was all that mattered, right? Well, to be honest, right now he didn't feel all that comfortable. His work shoes were aching him. He would've slipped his socked feet out of them if it were socially acceptable in a cafeteria.
Alex finished his coffee and placed it gently on his empty plate with a small chink of ceramic on ceramic. He wanted another one but... he wasn't sure if he wanted to go up and ask Rancho seeing that he was being laughed at for something. Alex shrank down in his seat and fidgeted with the end of his cashmere scarf, stealing glimpses in Rancho's direction every so often as he tried to encourage himself to just go up and order a fucking coffee. If Mack were here he'd fix it and make everything better. Mack spoiled Alex like that - he sorted everything he didn't like out. Alex wanted Mack here.

Rancho watched as the customer debated whether to come to the counter to order up again or not. So he took it upon himself to head over there and ask himself. With a pad of order slip and a pen, Rancho went over to the window seat. "Sir, i sense you need something else, though i know not why you hesitated to call. Is there anything else you need?" he asked politely and with a smile. But in his mind, he was barking laughter. The clothes did make him look too gay. Not that Rancho wasn't gay. He was bi but preferred men more than he did women. but that was besides the point. He patiently waited.
Rancho didn't know what was wrong. But then he turned to look out the window and saw Todd. He was passing by and waved at him. Rancho mouthed a "I'll be there soon... Save some food for me." Todd had nodded and went on his way. Then he turned back and smiled even more for the customer. He was going to get free food and silver was making it. It was going to be treat and it was going to be interesting since he was going to bring news to silver about the guy he played with at the pub.

Alex could've kicked himself. He'd made his indecision obvious enough for Rancho to pick up on and actually come over to take his order. Talk about awkward. Alex clasped his hands tightly on his lap to stop them from shaking as he regained the ability to speak once more. The teen dampened his bottom lip with his tongue and drew in a shaky breath - why was ordering a fucking coffee so hard now? "I'd like... just another coffee, por fa'." Alex finally managed to say, not looking away from his hands now. "Oh... and the bill."
Alex fell into the type of silence that hinted that the interaction wasn't going to continue any. He just couldn't shake the feeling that Rancho had been laughing at him. And he wasn't sure why it bothered him so much. Without really thinking, the teen reached out and caught Rancho's arm with delicate fingers before he walked out of his reach. Alex looked up at him with golden-speckled eyes. "Rancho, why were... I j-just..." Alex sighed noisily and retracted his hand, turning back to look out the window. How the fuck were you meant to ask someone why they were laughing without passing off as a creep or something? You wouldn't. So Alex decided to just drop the matter before he made things worse for himself.
"Never mind... ignore me, I'm just tired... work must be getting to me." Great. Now he was going to seem like some odd teenager. "Just the coffee and the bill, gracias." Alex mumbled as he glanced down at the screen of his phone sadly. He thought he was going to enjoy working at a hospital - it'd been his dream. But, a couple of days in, and he was beginning to realize he'd idealized it terribly. The dream wasn't as good as the reality.

Rancho wrote down what the customer ordered and smiled. He was just about to head back when he was stopped. Why was he what? Laughing? Rancho could do two things at that time: He could tell the truth and embarrassed the customer and get himself into trouble then trouble again with Silver. Or he could lie. Yeah, he was going to lie instead. He didn't want trouble from Silver. "why was I laughing? is that what you wanted to ask?'" Rancho beat him to it. So the customer had been looking at him as well. Not that it was new to Rancho. Everyone just turned to look at him again and again.
He smiled politely and stood up straight, "I was merely laughing to myself because I had remembered a neighbor I once had that looked a bit like you. He was all shy and would stutter whenever anyone would come near him. He must be like your size now since he was always smaller than me. I am sorry if I have offended you in anyway. I mean no harm at all." he said with an apologetic tone and facial expression. However, inwardly, he was smirking to himself. Seriously, was this guy actually watching him for some reason?

Was this guy psychic or something? How was he sure that Alex was going to ask him about his laughter? Shit. Was he a telepath? The teen made a mental rerun of all the thoughts he'd had from the moment he entered the door up until right now. Had he thought about sex? Not really... but that didn't matter. Because he was thinking about it right now. Fuckfuckfuck. Now was not the time to think these things!
"You don't have to explain yourself." Alex chuckled weakly, his cheeks flushing the colour of roses. "I'll have you know I'm not actually shy... I'm just getting used to everything and... I'm not exactly having much good luck so far." So much had already fucking happened. He supposed the only actual good thing that had happened was finding a friend in Archer and being reunited with Ackley. "Already argued with---... never mind. I seem to have trouble keeping my mouth shut." Alex laughed and sighed, placing his elbow on the table and resting his cheek in the palm of his hand. "You should... go back to the counter. You've probably got other customers. I don't want to get you in trouble because of my teenage woes."

Rancho smiled to himself really. He was a good liar. Not that he didn't learn from the master, Silver. he simply chuckled and smiled politely. "Not that shy... Yes but a bit shy still... But its alright. You look nice with a brush of scarlet on your face by the way." he said as he left and went to make the customer's order. He was going to go on his break just as soon as he finished the coffee. He smiled t'o himself as he made the coffee. Making sure that he wouldn't laugh to himself lest he made himself suspicious again.
After finishing the cup of coffee, he took off his apron and went to give the customer his coffee. But he sat down and smiled at him. "Your coffee...And I'm on break now. You said you argued with someone? Anything I can do to help? I'm a good listener and I can probably offer you a good advice. Free of charge. I'm Rancho by the way. But you already know that." he said politely. Here was his chance to find out. And he wasn't going to mess this one chance up.

Why did people always feel the need to point his blush out? It just made it worse. Alex prayed that by the time the guy returned with his fresh cup of caffeine that any vestige of colour wasn't too notable. He was trying to prove that he wasn't shy, darn it. Alex was the least shy person alive in this town just that... dating Mackenzie had definitely mellowed him out a bit.
Alex's honey coloured eyes widened slightly when Rancho took a seat on his table. He certainly wasn't expecting his coffee to come with company, but Alex wasn't going to complain. He gave the older man another 'gracias' and cradled the steaming mug between his lithe fingers. He supposed it wouldn't hurt to talk to the guy.
"Yes... I did..." Alex said softly, sipping a teency bit on his coffee and trying not to scald himself with the burning liquid. "I argued with my boyfriend pretty badly the other night." He paused for a moment in case the guy had an adverse reaction to him dating a guy. He didn't fancy his drink going everywhere or something like that. "I did something. And then I hurt myself and, well, I was drunk so the details are foggy but... point is... he was so hell bent on hurting someone that night. Usually I'm able to placate him when he gets like that but, y'know, this time I almost couldn't. He moved over to Alderres with me and... I'm seriously worried that it was a mistake."

Why was it that Rancho actually wanted to give him an advice? Maybe because it was due to the fact that he envied the other for having a relationship when he couldn't have one himself because the one he wanted was his best friend and he'd rather be a friend than nothing at all. [color=Maroon"If i were in his place, I wouldn't have freaked out and lose myself. It was better if he carried a steady and level head. But if you say that you weren't able to calm him down meant that your boyfriend actually thought he needed to do something to have protected you. Its not really just about what you did. Its about him not being able to have stopped whatever it was that happened and had seen you do something terrible and et again failed to do anything about it."
[/color] Rancho explained calmly.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote] "You see... I can tell that he is the tougher one between you two. The one that does the protecting and all. And since he wasn't able to do anything at all, he felt as if he was useless. That he couldn't even avenge you. Not that I'm siding with him, its just that, that is how we feel sometimes. When we don't get to protect someone we truly care for, we tend to forget to think things through. It is also because we are scared. That we failed on the one thing that we swore to ourselves that we would do: to protect the one we cherish most." he said as he smiled politely, for real this time.

When Rancho smiled, Alex returned it with one of his own before disappearing back into his ceramic mug. He knew the man had a point. Mack had always been the protective one ever since he'd known him. Heck. Mack had even tried to kill Alex when he found out that Alex had cheated Ackley out of a kiss while the pair were dating.
"He came so close to hurting the guy though." Alex muttered, swiping her fingertip over a dribble of honey that remained on his empty plate. "I think he would've even tried killing him if he'd been given the chance." He mused out loud, looking down at the globule of golden sweetness gathered on his pointer finger before it disappeared between his lips. "But then... I can't blame him. He saw me get run over by a car. I think even I would've wanted the same if it'd been Mack. But still..."
