Moriel stared at the abyss the deer had disappeared into. His mind was reeling through centuries of knowledge on wildlife, texts and manuscripts and observational findings. There had been cases, of course, but to see one with his own eyes was powerful. They didn't know quite why a creature would do something like that.
"Perhaps. But even if it lived to breed, its genetic imperfections would weaken the herd," he observed aloud. His smile faded into simple wonderment. He ran through the actions and stature of the mother as she had ushered her babe away. "No," he murmured, sounding a bit dazed. "No, it's not his use that she would keep him for."
He nodded, deciding upon his theory with renewed confidence. "That's love. She's taking care of him because she loves him. There's no other reason."

Dane should stop comparing himself to the fawn. It wasn't healthy and shouldn't happen. Yet everything Moriel said did just that. He weakened the herd? Which meant he weakened Mori. He had to go around trying to help Dane when it was just hurting himself. He could be doing something way more productive right now... instead he was out on a walk because Dane had been sulking. Dane shouldn't do this to Mori. He shouldn't hold him back like that. He should have died and now that he hadn't, Mori was paying for it because Dane had been stupid enough to accept his help.
The next thing Moriel said caught Dane's ears though. If the doe kept the fawn around because of love then... what did Mori do. Dane's eyes widened slightly before he caught himself. Moriel was always exceedingly friends. Dane didn't mind that. But he was always helping Dane... he seemed genuienly concerned about what happened to Dane. And Dane knew Mori swung that way. He had kept lovers before. William. They had talked about it. What if Mori loved him? No... surely that would be way too soon for love. But like? In possibly more of a way than Dane thought? Maybe he was just being ridiculous. Yet... they had cuddled today on the couch, and that didn't exactly seem just friendly. But Dane started that. Not Mori. Mori didn't stop it though.
Dane shook his head and snapped out of the daze he was in. He couldn't think about that. It might not be true or anything. It might just be Dane's mind thinking up ridiculous things. He took a deep breath and smiled slightly at the angel. "Love can make someone do incredible things."

It took him a moment to catch the weight of what he'd been saying. There he was, going at the heavy topics again. Moriel looked down at the ground and smiled, faintly. "Yes. I suppose it can." He himself had done many things for love's sake alone. "Things that are foolish and difficult and always, always worth it in the end." If it wasn't true, he refused to hear the truth. Love was the one true wildcard in this world, and he loved the excitement and power it lent.
He sighed and looked up once more, toward the street. "Now, I suppose we should get going. It looks like it might rain later. My wings are rather irritating to dry, and I'd rather not tuck them in." Without looking back at Dane again (he couldn't, not just now with such fanciful and romanticized thoughts running rampant in his head), Moriel started back down the street, hands tucked in his jacket pockets and hat tipped down to shield the conflict in his eyes.

Was Dane always worth it? Was there a point for him to be saved? Why couldn't Mori just let him die already. Was it really because he loved him? Dane shook his head slightly to stop the bombard of questions running through his mind. He would figure it out. He would think about it later or something. Now wasn't the time to start to question the incentives of the angel before him. He was helping him, and that was all that truly mattered.
So he changed what his mind was thinking of and started to focus back on Mori. It was kind of chilly out here, like he said. Dane kind of wished he would have worn something better than a sweater, but the cold didn't bother him too much. Mori didn't need to know that though, when Dane moved closer to Mori slightly. Avoiding his wings and looking up at him with slightly big eyes. "Why do you like to keep your wings out like that? I haven't seen a lot of angels that keep their wings out like you do. Not that I'm objecting. I think they look... what's the right word. Pretty?" Dane joked and pushed into his side slightly as they walked.

Dane fell into step beside him, so he glanced to the side and offered a small, distracted sort of smile. His wings shook out a bit just at the mention of them, an autonomic response. "My wings? Well, I've always preferred having them out," he explained. "Of course, that wasn't always possible before I came to Carford. Only my wives and high ranking government officials were aware of my being an angel."
He thought on the question for a moment, and then told him, "Well, I suppose part of it is psychological. I don't like having to hide my identity. Mostly, though, I find it...itchy." His eyes narrowed at the thought of it. "Like an itch under the skin that I can't get to. It's highly unpleasant, I much prefer having them out."
The trees began giving way to storefronts and streets. They passed a few people, all of whom nodded in greeting at Moriel, and he responded in kind. "Mrs. Lowing," he would say, and tip his hat. Most people in town knew him, and he knew most of the longer-standing residents by name. Yet very few knew him as anything more than 'that angel that runs the lighthouse.'

Don't touch him. Don't grab his hand. Don't do things that wouldn't be considered acceptable for two males that are only friends. Dane had to keep telling him these things. Why he had to tell himself in the first place, he wasn't entirely sure. It didn't make sense in his mind and he kept telling himself he'd think about it later. This walk was supposed to be peaceful. A little walk down memory lane. Something other than trying to tell himself not to grab his hand or touch him.
"You shouldn't have hid you being an angel. I think that's what makes you you." Dane told him with another smile. He couldn't picture Mori without his wings out. It was... just him. The way his wings had enclosed Dane when they were on the couch... that was something no one else could have done. No one else had wings. Those wings had... a sense of security about them. Dane had felt safe in them. "Well. I like them out as well." Dane told with a serious face. "So don't put them in. Ever." He meant that too. He didn't want them to be in.

He smiled appreciatively at Dane's support. "Well, I would rather if it hadn't been necessary, but people were quite superstitious back then. They would have worshiped me or something ridiculous like that," he explained. "It would have been incredibly inconvenient." Mori had once accidentally revealed himself to a worker at the palace and just barely avoided a full-blown religious sect dedicated to following his every word. The sultan himself had to commit the group to secrecy and sanity.
They neared the grocery store. Before they went up to the door, Moriel slowed and turned to look curiously at his companion. The conviction in his voice was peculiar for a topic that affected him so little. His brow furrowed for a moment before his whole expression relaxed into a mild sort of satisfaction. Though Dane's feelings were no doubt of a much friendlier nature, it seemed that Mori wasn't the only one who had started to develop stronger emotional ties. "I'll do my best," the angel assured him.
With that, he turned again and walked into the grocery. It was a slow day. A few shoppers were puttering about the aisles, and two weary-looking cashiers were chatting while they mopped. He nodded at the one closest. "Good day." She nodded at him, a bit shy.

When Dane and Mori went into the grocery store... it felt... different. Dane wasn't sure how it felt. Maybe nice at first. He remembered the place. All the memories that came with it, even. The smiles and laughs he used to have as they cleaned up before close. All the times he would get old people stopping to tell him what a good boy he was. All of it. He cracked a smile for a second before he realized what was going on. No... this was his past and he was a new person now. A different person. He wasn't allowed happiness. He didn't have it and he wasn't allowed it.
He turned back to Mori with eyes wide and full of panic. He gripped onto Mori's waist with his hand and he could feel his heart begin to speed up. "I don't like this anymore. I want to go back." He practically begged Mori. He just... couldn't handle this. He wanted to break down. He wasn't this person anymore and the two people shouldn't meet. It shouldn't fucking happen and it was. Dane wanted to run back, but instead he gripped onto Mori tighter.

He was greeting the cashier when Mori felt a strong grip on his waist. He looked down at the hand, and then his eyes followed the arm up to the panicked face staring at him. Something was wrong. This place had stirred something, something highly unpleasant. Dane had tried, had left the lighthouse, and that was a big step. Moriel wasn't about to make him stay in this panic any longer. He nodded again at the girl and, with a firm hand on the man's upper arm, guided his friend out of the store.
"You did very well for your first day out," he assured Dane, not wanting him to feel as if he'd failed. "We can talk about this when we get back, if you'd like. Now hold on tightly." With that, he wrapped his arm around his companion's middle, His wings spread behind him, and with two strong flaps and a little help from his aerokinesis, they were in the sky. The air was cool, so he didn't take them very high or fast, just glided calmly back toward home. He had both arms around Dane, pressing them together chest-to-chest. It was perhaps a bit too much contact, but it was the safest way to transport a full-grown man while he flew.

Dane was glad when Mori pulled him out of the store. He had almost been afraid that Mori might make him stay in there. He didn't want to. He breathed better when he was outside. He almost didn't realize that he was holding a breath until he was outside. He was going to tell Mori that he wasn't sure if he could talk about it or not when he felt Mori grab hold of him tightly. He startled a bit before he realized what Mori was doing. No way... he wasn't going to... Oh my god they were going to fly.
Dane wrapped his legs tightly around Mori's middle and wrapped his arms around his neck. He wasn't afraid of heights or anything, but it wasn't like he had flown like this before. He buried his face in Mori's neck at first before deciding to pull back and look at Mori as they flew. "Did you ever think it might be a good idea to ask me if I was okay with flying?" Dane asked him with a laugh. They were so close to each other... Their entire bodies were pressed together and their faces inches from one another, yet Dane felt strangely comfortable.

Dane's question confused the angel for a brief moment. He looked down at the amusement on his face. It was much preferable to the panic he had seen not moments ago. Moriel grinned. "No. Apparently it did not." He might have worried that he had startled his friend again if not for the laughter, which he returned silently, only noticeable in the gentle shaking of his chest against his passenger's. "I won't drop you, if that's what you're worried about."
The trip was markedly shorter by wing than by foot, so it was mere minutes before they approached the lighthouse. Mori had been planning to touch down by the front door, but a mischievous idea took hold of him and they sailed higher, nearly to the peak of the tower. They alighted on the catwalk surrounding the lantern room, the cool ocean wind breezing past them. "My version of a back door," he explained wryly. Mori walked over to the one pane of glass that served as a door and opened it, holding it open for Dane.
"You haven't been up this high yet, have you?" he asked. "It's my favorite part of the house."

Dane was a bit confused when he didn't take them to the front door, but just held on tightly to him. He liked it up in the sky. It felt kind of nice, and breezy in the air. He wouldn't mind going on another flying trip sometime. He was trying not to think about the fact that he liked being that close to Mori. He liked being close to him, even if he wasn't sure why he liked doing so. When they landed, Dane looked around. He hadn't been up there yet, and Mori knew that from what he said. Dane shook his head and went in the door that Mori held open for him.
Dane looked and thought it was beautiful. He was actually kind of depressed that Mori hadn't shown him this before. "Is there a better way to get up here, rather than flying?" Dane asked him with a smile as he turned back to look around. He should have known this was here because it was a lighthouse. "I can see why it's your favorite. If you tell me how to get up here, I might not want to leave."

Moriel closed the door behind them and looked out over the water. "If you take the stairs all the way up to the observation room, there's a ladder that leads up here," he told him. "I'll show you on the way down. You're welcome up here whenever you like, but I must warn you...at night, you're likely to get blinded." He smirked and gestured toward the gigantic light in the center of the room.
He glanced sideways at Dane, fighting off the affection that coursed through him. This was about Dane, about helping. Nothing more. "You did very well today," he told him. "It was a big step. Things won't happen all at once, so don't get discouraged."
With that, he raised a trapdoor on the floor, revealing a ladder into the observation room, where he'd been napping earlier. His blanket was still draped over the chair, an empty tea cup on the table beside it. Moriel dropped down and waited for Dane to follow before opening the door to the stairway.
"I'll let you get back to your reading," he told him. "I'm afraid I have a meeting with my accountant this afternoon."

Coming here at night almost sounded like a challenge to Dane, and he was sure he would end up here late at night with ridiculously dark sunglasses on to read or something. Yes. He liked challenges. He liked them a lot. He smirked at Mori. "Sure. No nighttime. Gotcha." He rolled his eyes and followed him down the ladder. He could see himself being up there a lot now. Oh yes. Mori should have never shown him that place.
Dane gave Mori a smile when he told him he did good, even if he thought he did horrible. He couldn't ask any more of Mori. He was already doing so much. He paused awkwardly before going and giving Mori a hug. He just... looked like he needed one? Okay... so Dane wanted to hug him, but he didn't want to admit that to himself. He pulled back quickly and gave him another quick smile before nodding. "Right... I'll go. Just uhm. I'll go read. Have fun at that... meeting." Dane told him before quickly rushing out of the room and practically running down the stairs. There was something about Mori that was making Dane... feel weird. He wasn't sure he liked it though.
